The Quiet Power of Coaching (Without Calling It That)

Why I Love HR

If I were asked what I’m most passionate about in Human Resources, I’d answer without hesitation: the development of people. Watching someone grow, thrive, and find their path — that’s the heartbeat of my career.

I’ll admit, I’ve bragged about former employees. I’ve gushed over their achievements like a proud parent, saying things like:

“I’d love to think I had some tiny contribution to their success.” “Maybe I helped them go in the direction they wanted.”

Not out of arrogance, but out of hope — the dream that I might have made a difference.

The Joy of Watching Others Grow

Helping people solve issues, resolve conflicts, and foster open communication has always been deeply rewarding. For those familiar with the VIA Total 24 Character Strengths test (popular in coaching circles), my top-ranked strength — by a country mile — is Honesty. Personality tests consistently place me in the top 90th percentile for honesty, too.

This trait has been both a blessing and a curse (a story for another blog), but it’s allowed me to resolve issues authentically and support people with integrity. Still, my true passion lies in hiring talented individuals and nurturing that seed of potential — helping them become whatever they aspire to be, for their own growth and the benefit of the organization.

Coaching Without Realizing It

Interestingly, I often found myself coaching and mentoring people on how to build their CVs (my code for their career/life direction)— not always a direct benefit to the organization, but something I felt deeply passionate about. I wanted to guide people honestly, even if it meant helping them move on.

Then in 2023, something shifted. For the first time, I received coaching myself. I’d been mentored before, but never coached. And it sparked something in me.

The Art of Empowering Others

Coaching — without the mentoring — intrigued me. The idea of partnering with someone to help them reach their full potential, not by advising, but by asking the right questions. Questions that empower them to resolve their own issues, determine their own actions, and achieve their own goals.

That’s when I realized: I’d been coaching all along. I just hadn’t named it.

Final Thought

What if the greatest impact we make isn’t in the advice we give, but in the space we hold for others to grow?
